Gooney Bird Greene

Hey guys! I know, it's been really long since I've posted. Now that I think about it, it's actually been an entire year. Even more than that, actually. It's been 1 year and seven days since I posted Because of Mr. Terupt. But now, I have an amazing book with an amazing plot and it's by an amazing author named Lois Lowry. The book in question is called Gooney Bird Greene

Gooney Bird is an eccentric child and the new kid at Watertower Elementary. Think about the most unique person you've ever met. Gooney Bird is probably three times more unique. And it applies to everything about her. On her first day of school, she shows up wearing pajamas and cowboy boots. She tells unusual "absolutely true" stories such as "How Gooney Bird Moved to Watertower from China on a Flying Carpet" and "How Gooney Bird was Late To School Because She Directed an Orchestra". And she is very, very mature for her age. Always wanting to be "right smack in the middle of everything", Gooney Bird is charming right down to the core.

I came across the sequel, Gooney Bird and the Room Mother, when I was around the age of six or seven. When I was about nine years old, I discovered that the book had a prequel (this book). Recently, my mother found it in the library and brought it home so that my younger brother could read it and so that we both could find out what happens. I love the book because Gooney Bird is such a charismatic character. I laughed at the "absolutely true" stories because the title isn't what it seems. (And by the way, every one of the stories, even the ones above, are possible in real life!) I recommend this book, not for me, but for younger kids around the age of the characters in the book (second graders). Lois Lowry is the author of several middle-grade books, such as The Giver and Number the Stars. These books may be coming up in future blog posts.

Thanks for reading, and see you next time!
